Sheema District Health Initiative

About SDHI

The Sheema District Health Initiative (SDHI) is a strategic, community-centred health framework designed to transform the clinical landscape of Sheema District, Uganda. As the region undergoes a rapid epidemiological transition from poverty toward middle-class status, SDHI addresses the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through a robust model of integrated management and prevention.

Formally endorsed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Uganda Government, the initiative operates through a unique tripartite collaboration:
  • HOPIET-UG serves as the primary research and clinical implementation group.
  • TWENDE ("Tweragurize Na Dollar Emwe") acts as the innovative financing agent, leveraging community-driven resource mobilisation.
  • The Ministry of Health provides regulatory oversight and capital support.

HOPIET-UG Integrated Management of NCDs and Research Centre

The initiative is anchored at the HOPIET-UG Integrated Management of NCDs and Research Centre, a dedicated facility located at Kabwohe Health Centre IV. This coordinating centre—established through the combined financial contributions of the local community and the MoH—functions as the district's hub for longitudinal research, specialised NCD clinics, and health worker capacity building. By integrating high-level research with community-funded healthcare delivery, SDHI seeks to create a sustainable, scalable blueprint for improving health outcomes across the life course in Sub-Saharan Africa.
